Monk Wants Promotion

Garry Monk has seen most of this season like the rest of us – as a spectator. An injury back at Scunthorpe in August effectively ended the season for him and whilst only now he is forcing his way back into the reckoning he is just happy to be playing again and hopeful for a new contract.

Monk was captain in Swansea’s play off final of last season and shed tears after the final whistle blew and Barnsley celebrated the promotion he and his team mates craved. But with a chance to rectify that this season, Monk is hopeful that Roberto will give him a new contract and allow him to work with him next season.

The contract situation’s been on my mind all season," Monk confesses. "I had to try to forget about it and concentrate on getting fit and I’m delighted I’ve managed that. "Now I’ve just got to wait and hope that I get offered a new deal. "You never know in football, and I have been burned in this situation before. "But this is a great club and I just hope I’ll still be a part of it next season. "The chairman talks about only being interested in players who want to play for Swansea City. "I can assure you I’m one of those.

I’ve played a part off the pitch, but as captain you want to be there leading the team out, "It’s disappointing because I felt so good in pre-season. I thought I was going to have the best season of my life. "Now my main aim is to be fully fit next year and make up for lost time. "Hopefully that will be at Swansea, because the future under Roberto looks bright." The future could yet be in the Championship, although Monk concedes the odds are against Swansea despite the dramatic triumph he watched from the dugout at Carlisle. Somehow they must outperform Oldham, who face a Chesterfield outfit doomed to League Two, if they are to squeeze into the top six. "The lads have only lost once since Roberto took over and I don’t think you could have asked for much more than that," says Monk. "It’s a just a shame that even another win on Saturday still might not be enough. "We played Chesterfield at the end of last season and turned them over quite easily, but you never know what will happen at Oldham. "Chesterfield won last Saturday, so that will have lifted them, and an early sending off for Oldham or something like that might just be the bit of luck we need."
