The Swans will have competition from the likes of Premiership bound Birmingham City as well as both Dundee United and Hearts in Scotland. Scotland grabbed 26 goals for St Johnstone last season as they narrowly missed out on a place in the Scottish Premier League thanks to a last minute goal from Gretna on the final day of the season.

Since his move from Dundee United two years ago he has grabbed 33 goals in 65 starts in the league as well as 9 in 15 games in other competitions. He has 24 caps for his country – grabbing 5 goals

"Swansea have contacted us officially to express an interest in taking Jason," said St Johnstone boss Owen Coyle. "We have not come up with a figure, but if any club wants Jason now, they have to be reasonable and then sort out a work permit."

Scotland is out of contract at the end of August that may well force Coyle’s hand "We are not being silly over money, but no-one should insult us with a derogatory offer," the former Bolton Wanderers midfielder added. "Jason is under contract until the end of August. "We won’t be greedy, but clubs should not be disrespectful with compensation offers. "I will have no qualms in playing Jason for the first month of next season if he is still with us."

Roberto Martinez confirmed the interest but denied that the talks had gone any further than just that "All we have done is get information about the player," he told the Evening Post "He is a player that we have been watching for quite a while and I’m still to make my mind up as to whether he would be a good Swansea City player."
