Feeney Vows To Win Fans Over

It’s fair to say that Warren Feeney’s move from Cardiff has hardly been a cause for mass celebration within the Swansea fanbase over the past few days. Criticism from supporters of the clubs he has previously played for together with the usual "He played for Cardiff" line means that it’s almost believable that Feeney is on a hiding to nothing at Swansea.

Having almost joined the club back in February before opting instead for Cardiff won’t help his cause in some corners but it is something that Feeney is taking on the chin and he believes that he will win the fans over in the four months of his stay, maybe even enough to win himself a permanent move in the New Year.

As Roberto’s last capture before the transfer window shut on Saturday, Feeney arrived at the Liberty Stadium yesterday to face the local media and had the following to say to the Evening Post ”There was interest from Swansea in March and at the end of last season ”It wasn’t that I didn’t want to come here because Swansea’s a club with great potential, but going to Cardiff meant another chance for me in the Championship and I couldn’t really turn that down. ”But I’m here now and I’m really looking forward to it. You look at the size of the club and the fanbase at Swansea and it’s exciting. "Hopefully I can get playing again and start feeling good about myself again. "Cardiff’s a good club, but at the end of the day nobody’s happy when they’re not playing. They’ve signed people like Robbie and Jimmy and it’s hard to knock people like that out of the side. Hopefully I will get a chance at Swansea.

My father was actually born in Swansea, but he only lived here for a couple of weeks because my grandfather was transferred to Ipswich "My grandfather is no longer with us, but my dad was pleased when I told him about Swansea because he knows it’s a massive club. He’s just told me to come down here and do the business and that’s what I’m hoping to do. "I’m here for four months and we’ll see what happens after that.

"A lot of people have warned me about the rivalry between Cardiff and Swansea, but I’ve just got to be professional and it doesn’t really faze me at all "I’m a big Rangers fan and I remember when Mo Johnston (the former Celtic striker) joined them, and there’s no bigger rivalry than that. "Technically I’m still a Cardiff player, so I’m probably in a bit of a no-win situation. But I’m not afraid of anything like that and I think if I get off to a good start everybody here will forgive me."

Feeney won’t get his chance to impress in tonight’s Johnstone’s Pain Trophy tie – he is away on international duty with Northern Ireland and the next game scheduled for the Swans is the visit of Carlisle a week on Friday.

"It’s a bit of a blow because you want to get going at a new club," Feeney adds. "But it can’t be helped. We’re in a great position in the group, so I’ll focus on Northern Ireland for a couple of weeks and then get stuck into things here."
