Monk Reflects On A Welcome Return |
Indeed, it would be easy to say that Monk is on a new release of life under the new management – his game seems to have raised a notch or two in his time out from the side. Having been offered, and signed, a new deal in the summer, Monk has taken back over the Captain’s armband and is currently seen as the rock of the central defence that nearly everyone agrees needs strengthening. But it does appear that that strengthening will not be at the expense of Monk’s place in the team with current defensive partner Dennie Lawrence seemingly ahead of him in the "chop stakes" But for Monk it’s just great to be back after such as testing year as he told the Wales on Sunday. Much criticism was pointed in his direction, especially when the contract offer was on the table but it just washed over Monk at the time “I heard what some people were saying,” said Monk. “A lot of stuff was said over the summer and before that but what can you do? “I didn’t need any extra motivation to be out there playing again, just being fit enough is all I needed. “And I can take criticism on the chin – but I’d be lying if it didn’t drive me on a little more to try and prove those people wrong. “I knew I could come back and I know what I can do so I haven’t been surprised by the way I’ve settled back into things. Perhaps others have been, but I knew once I was ready I could come back better than before." Part of Monk’s rehabilitation was long Gower cycle rides rather than work on the training pitch but Monk knows where he would rather be “It seems like a million miles away,” said Monk. “It was a long road but you can’t believe how happy I am just to be involved again, to have the chance to play and how much I appreciate the chance. “I was ready at the end of last season, but we waited and in a way I’m glad because I needed to be able to work over the summer and I can really feel the difference now. “And give me a couple of months and there’ll be even more of a difference. “I’ve only played a few games and I’m really pleased so far, but I’m not stupid enough to say I’ve done all I needed. “There’s lot more to come from me and this team. My real aim isn’t to stop people criticising me, it’s to achieve something here.” And if Monk achieves his ambitions while wearing the White shirt then very few people are likely to have any cause for complaint.
