Feeney Starts But N Ireland Beaten Again

Warren Feeney was promoted to the starting line-up but a disappointing week for Northern Ireland was completed when they were beaten 2-1 by Iceland giving themselves a real uphill task to qualify.

Feeney was a used sub in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Latvia but he progressed into the starting line up at the expense of Kyle Lafferty. And it was Feeney who provided the first goalmouth action with Arni Gautur Arason pushing clear the his fierce shot in the opening minute.

Feeney though won’t make next month’s trip to Sweden after he fouled Arason as the keeper cleared just before the break and the resulting yellow card was his second in the competition.

Elsewhere on the international scene there was a fantastic win for Wales, who triumphed 5-2 in Slovakia to give themselves a real chance of finishing third in the group whilst also celebrating a superb win are Scotland, who won in Paris thanks to James McFadden’s 2nd half goal. The Scots now top their group with 3 games to go – ahead of both World Champions Italy and World Cup finalists France.

England cruised past Russia 3-0 at Wembley to move into 2nd place – 3 points behind Croatia.
