Jason Scotland's brace at Northampton yesterday were numbers 4,994 and 4,995 on the road to that tally and the Swans are expected to pass the 5,000 barrier sometime between now and the end of the month (passing it on Tuesday night would be quite nice…!)
The Swans started the season looking for 70 goals to reach that barrier but a fine run of results and form has put them within the handful of goals of that target and all expectation for it to be done. There is, of course, every chance that the barrier could be passed on Easter Monday when the Sky TV cameras take to the Liberty to watch the home clash with Bristol Rovers.
Ivor Allchurch is the leading light in helping the Swans to that target with 164 goals in his 445 league appearances whilst more recently Robbie James with 115 and Lee Trundle with 78 have added to the tally.
Smart money I guess is on Jason Scotland – who already has 18 (or 19 depending which stats you refer to) league goals to his name – to grab the all important 5,000th goal whilst outside bets would probably be placed on Ferrie Bodde or Andy Robinson. But, whoever grabs the landmark strike will have their place written in Swansea's record books and I guess, for a little while at least, find themselves the answer to quiz questions – the same as Adrian Forbes was when he scored the last league goal at the Vetch Field or Bayo Akinfenwa was with the first league goal at the Liberty Stadium.
Five goals and counting………..
