Scotland currently leads Beckford by four goals in the scoring charts after his three goals over the Easter Period but with the Leeds man back on target with his own brace on Saturday night the fight to win the title for top scorer goes right to the wire. The Yorkshire side currently have a game in hand over the Swans – a Yorkshire derby against Doncaster and Beckford will be looking to that game to try and close the deficit after a poor run of form since Christmas.
With Leeds' blistering start to the season it only looked like one winner in the race for the golden boot but Scotland as grabbed 11 league goals in the last 11 league fixtures – including goals in 9 of the last 10 away games and 7 successive away games to shoot himself into prime position to take the accolade. Despite much criticism from the supporters at times Scotland now has a hugely impressive 28 goals this season in all competitions – a figure that has come in 40 starts.
However, Beckford believes that he can be caught and said after Leeds' weekend victory ”It had been five games without a goal so I'm delighted to get back to scoring ways because I'm chasing Jason Scotland at the top of the charts.”
The race appears to be one of the two horse variety with nobody seemingly likely to challenge either player in the scoring stakes.
