Last season's players player of the year has yet to commit to the extended terms offered to him by the club although he has automatically triggered the one year extension based on his appearances last season. However, the club want to tie the captain into a longer deal and await his signature on that contract as well.
But Roberto remains happy that Monk will sign a deal shortly and relieve any worries that people may have that he could follow Andy Robinson and Ferrie Bodde out of the exit door despite rumours starting to circulate of interest in the captain following his excellent performances last season.
Speaking to the Western Mail, Martinez said “Garry has definitely got another year with Swansea, so whatever happens he will be our club captain next season. I was delighted to see how strong he came back last year and I think he will be vital for us in the Championship.
“We want him to remain for more than one year. I’m sure he views it that way, too.
“I’m looking forward to seeing him do a great job as captain next year. It’s a position I hope he holds for years to come.”
