Gower, who signed on Thursday night, insists that he is not ready to be labelled "the new Andy Robinson" but acknowledges that there are similarities between the two styles and that Robinson was successful at Swansea.

But he believes that those watching will soon realise that there is also a difference between the two of them and states that he could play anywhere across the midfield which gives much needed flexibility within the squad.

Gower also says that there was only one option for him once the Swans had made their move and yet again the passion of Roberto is evident when listening to a new signing highlight the reasons why they chose Swansea over other options that also included Nottingham Forest and Blackpool.

Speaking to News of the World, Gower said "I know Andy was a popular player here but I don't think you can compare me to him.  I'm sure the fans will quickly see that we are different players and we both have different attributes.   There are a lot of players here who will fancy that left sided slit and I'm no stranger to playing somewhere else.

"I've played all across the midfield and in an advanced role.   I don't really see myself as an out-and-out winger because I'm right footed and I like to cut in and shoot.  All I know is if I'm as successful as Andy was then I would have done something right.

"I was immediately impressed when I spoke to the manager and heard his thoughts on the future.   He didn't promise this and that but just said how he wanted the club to progress.   I knew straight away that Swansea were the club to sign for."

Roberto himself believes that the capture of Gower proves that the Swans are a proposition that looks attractive despite not being able to flash the cash in the way that others do within the division and he added "To get someone like Mark on a free transfer in the inflated British market is quite something.   The fact he's chosen to join us while there was big interest from established teams at this level says a lot.

"We won't break the bank and remain sensible but it shows we can compete to bring top players in."
