The Swansea City and Wales defender was as disappointed as anyone on Tuesday night at the Swans surrender of their long unbeaten run.

Victory could have lifted them into the play off zone but two first half goals left them beaten for the first time since Birmingham triumphed at the Liberty at the end of November.

And on the back of such praise following recent displays it was doubly disappointing something that Williams acknowledges.  ”The scoreline was very disappointing, but what was worse for us was the performance,” he told the Evening Post.

”We have come a long way this season and we have raised our own expectations. We didn’t live up to them at Watford.

”It doesn’t matter how anyone else says we should have played, we have to reach the standards that we set individually and as a team.

”We tried and tried, but we couldn’t get into the rhythm that we usually have. Going into the last part of the season we need to win as many games as we can to get into the play-off spots. Every game is huge for us now — the performance and result.

”You’d probably take the result over the performance now. Earlier in the season we wanted the performance over the result — which we did — but it’s the other way around now.

”It’s about putting points on the board now and climbing up the table.

”We just try to distance ourselves from cup talk,” said Williams.

”We are not playing Manchester United, we are playing Fulham. The gaffer spoke to us and told us not to get ahead of ourselves, but he didn’t really need to say that anyway.

”We knew that the Watford game was more important. If we get promoted this season then we’ll be playing the likes of Manchester United every week.

”But we are concentrating on the league right now. Doncaster is a big game for us.

”Doncaster have been doing really well — they are on a brilliant run. They have got the momentum going into this game so we know what we have to do.”
