MacDonald was a surprise name on the teamsheet at Leicester on the weekend and is one of the Brian Flynn’s most senior players at the age of 21.

The Swansea born midfielder has made 18 appearances for the U-21’s, scoring once, and was recently called up to John Toshack’s senior squad for the trip to Azerbaijan.

The U21’s are unbeaten so far in their UEFA 2011 Championship qualifiers campaign and most recently recorded a 5-1 win against Luxembourg at Llanelli’s Parc Y Scarlets.

“Shaun has been around this squad for a while now and has improved with every game,” a spokesman for the FAW said.

“He was in Swansea’s first team for the opening game of the season and deserves the honour of captaining the under-21s after giving so much to the squad.”

Fellow midfielder Joe Allen won’t play any part in the game after picking up an injury on the weekend at Leicester.
