Chaos reigned at the Liberty as the referee – according to Paulo Sousa – encouraged the Swans to put on an injured player to allow the game to finish with Adkins wondering if the Swans were deliberately trying to force an abandonment.

The red cards to Garry Monk, Gorka Pintado and Angel Rangel had left the Swans three men light whilst Stephen Dobbie's injury had meant just seven men were on the pitch when new signing Besian Idrizaj also was forced off for treatment.

After confusion reigned the referee told Sousa to put him back on the pitch and played just one minute of stoppage time before blowing the final whistle.

Speaking after the game, an unhappy Adkins said "We are in the third round for the first time in 21 years but this sadly won't take the headlines.

"The referee was left with no choice with the red cards. The lack of discipline has cost them. Swansea are a great team but they don't need to revert to those antics. You have to ask them whether they tried to get game abandoned? It's sad if they were.

'I've only ever seen this in the Birkenhead Sunday league. They were provoked. In what way? We were competitive and tackled."
