Whitbread is out of contract next summer so could pen a pre-contract deal as early as next January, and Jenkins says that the club could make another move in the future.

The American international was arguably Millwall’s best defender as they just missed out on promotion to the Championship with defeat to Scunthorpe in the play-off final.

Peterborough also had a bid accepted this summer but Whitbread rejected the chance to join the Championship new-boys, although it seems that the 25 year old was keen to make a move to the Liberty.

“We agreed a deal for Zak with Millwall,” Jenkins confirmed to the official site.

“But because he has just had a hip operation, the player felt it was better if he remained at the club until he was fully fit again.

“We will review the situation again in January.”

Swansea have strengthened their depleted defence today with the signing of Trinidad & Tobago defender Abu Bakr on a three month deal.
