But it will be against Swansea City rather than for his hometown club that Matthews lines up having had quite a couple of months in the blue shirt of Cardiff.

His first Championship goal has already been secured and tomorrow he is likely to feature in his first game against the Swans in just his 14th Cardiff appearance.

And the pressure atmosphere of derby day is what Tom Butler believes will be difficult for Matthews as he told the Evening Post “It will be the most pressurised game he will have played in

“If he makes a mistake then the fans will highlight it more than usual. With the environment he will be in and the atmosphere it will be interesting to see how he handles his first derby.

“As a youngster in that type of game, it could go either way for you.

“My first derby was for Sunderland against Newcastle at the Stadium of Light. It was an unbelievable experience.

“I didn’t realise how big the rivalry between Swansea and Cardiff was until I played in the cup game last year.

“There was a ringing in my ears for a few hours after that game — the atmosphere was amazing. These are the games which are special in football.

“He has done well for them and has dealt with the pressure despite being a young lad,” said Butler, who was sent off after the final whistle in the last derby.

“To get in the Cardiff side at that age shows his potential and they must have a lot of confidence in him.”
