Monk has been in superb form in past seasons and has formed a formidable partnership at the heart of the Swansea defence alongside Ashley Williams.

The 30 year old’s contract was set to expire next summer, but the former Southampton man has signed an extension early to avoid speculation about his future.

“I would love to finish my career here,” Monk told BBC Sport Wales.

“With the progression the club has made, I want to be part of that and I want more.”

“Garry is one of the players we think is very important to our project for his experience, quality and leadership,” Swans boss Paulo Sousa said.

“He is an important figure in the dressing room and on the pitch.

“He knows the club’s philosophy and I’m delighted he’s committed his long-term future to us.”

It’s thought to be the first of many contract extensions to come, with Leon Britton, Tom Butler, Andrea Orlandi and Cedric van der Gun all out of contract in July 2010.
