The Swansea City captain was speaking after speculation that Roberto Martinez was preparing a move for Williams in the January transfer window in another raid on his old club.

Reports surfaced in the weekend papers that Wigan were about to make a laughable £2m bid for Williams who skippered his country for the first time last weekend.

And Monk is not surprised by the speculation having played alongside Williams for much of his time at the Swans and seen him develop incredibly as a player.

Speaking to the Evening Post, Monk said “To us he’s an in-form player and I don’t really want to talk about him going anywhere

“I want him to stay here and I want the club to progress.

“I enjoy playing with him. We’ve got a good partnership, but he’s a Swansea City player and that’s the main thing.

“With the attributes he’s got — strength, passing and an athlete as well — he’s definitely got the potential to reach the Premier League. Those ingredients have worked well and I’m sure it won’t be long until he get’s there — with us.

“I think it’s probably the best week of Ashley’s career and he deserves it. I’ve said before he’s got great potential and he’s living up to it,” said Monk.

“He’s playing really well and he’s captained his country. I spoke to him about it and he was probably the proudest man in Wales.

“It’s great news for him, great news for the club and great news for his family.

“It sounds like he enjoyed himself out there and they got a great win as well.

“It’s inevitable if Ashley gets publicity he will be linked to this club and that club, that happens with a number of players here,” said Monk.

“But we’ve kept the nucleus of the squad. Every year there’s one or two that go, but every year there’s one or two that come in as well.

“I’m not saying Ashley will go. He’s only signed a new deal recently so I don’t think it’s a question for the club anymore, it’s just a case that it comes with the territory.”
