The Swansea City goalkeeper is fully focused on the job in hand but also wants to be at the Celtic Manor on Sunday to hopefully see Europe win back the Ryder Cup.

De Vries is waiting on a call from a friend to confirm his attendance on Sunday as he explained to the Western Mail “I’m still hoping, I know a teaching professional at the golf club I used to play at who’s doing coaching sessions at the Ryder Cup all week. He’s supposed to be ringing me back and sorting me out. I’m still waiting, but I don’t want to miss out.

“I’m a keen golfer and a big fan of the Ryder Cup. I play off 16, but I’m getting better as I’m having lessons – I was 21 not so long ago and the target is to get it down to under 10.

“It’s a great game and I love watching the pros and to have this kind of event up the road in Newport is quite amazing.

“So the plan would be for us to get a good win against Derby and then see Europe win on Sunday. It would make it a perfect weekend.

“It had been a bit difficult for us away from home,” admitted de Vries.

“A couple of results didn’t go our way, even if the performances were there, and a few decisions went against us.

“But it’s done now, people can stop talking about it and we can concentrate on kicking on.

“That’s the important thing. It was great winning away for the first time this season, but the last thing we now want to do is let that go to waste by not getting it right at home.

“The Liberty is a great place to play, from the atmosphere to the surface, but the most important thing is that it is somewhere we are comfortable and confident no matter who we play.

“You still have to have that focus and that concentration and not just expect it to happen for us just because we’re at home. It doesn’t work like that.”
