Scott Sinclair claimed his 17th goal of the season from the penalty spot to earn promotion-chasing Swansea a late point at Oakwell.

The ex-Chelsea winger won the penalty himself after being brought down by Barnsley keeper Luke Steele.

Barnsley had taken a deserved lead on 14 minutes when Bobby Hassell headed home when the visitors failed to clear a corner.

And Tykes Debutant Danny Haynes saw an effort ruled out for offside.

Despite missing the chance to go join-top of the Championship, Swansea will be grateful for the point, and could have gone on to win it in the dying moments had Luke Moore done better.

Barnsley will be frustrated not to have taken all three points after feeling they had done enough to see off the Welsh side.

Mark Robins’ Tykes attacked from the start putting the Swans under pressure and caused most of the problems from set pieces.

Garry O’Connor had the first real chance when his left-foot strike from a corner was cleared off the line by Jazz Richards.

And it was from another corner that led to the opening goal on 14 minutes.

The Swans failed to clear Jacob Butterfield’s delivery and Hassell’s header was adjudged to have crossed the line.

Barnsley could have doubled the lead moments later but goalkeeper Dorus de Vries used his feet to deny O’Connor.

Swansea took time to get into the game, but when they did, Scott Sinclair sent a shot wide from the edge of the box and Luke Moore sent an effort into Steele’s arms.

Steele came to the hosts rescue on the half-hour saving from Ashley Williams before the Swans defender skied the rebound.

Barnsley thought they had gone 2-0 up 11 minutes before the break through debutant Danny Haynes.

De Vries could only parry Manchester City loanee Kieran Trippier’s 25-yard into the path of Haynes, but the flag went up for offside.

Swansea made more of a fight for it in the second half with Williams sending Mark Gower’s cross wide, before Gower forced Steele into a great save from a free kick.

With 22 minutes to go, Swans boss Brendan Rodgers threw on striker Stephen Dobbie and winger Cedric van der Gun for Gower and Nathan Dyer in a bid to get something from the game.

Both substitutions gave Swansea a spring in their step, along with the return of Leon Britton and they played their part in sending Pratley to the by-line to cross for Sinclair at the far post, but ex-Chelsea winger headed wide.

And it was Sinclair who won and converted his third successive penalty six minutes from time after being tripped in the box by Steele to claim an unlikely point
