Nathan Dyer is a man revelling in the competition for places that the new signings have started
Dyer is likely to start the opening Premier League fixture on Monday night at Manchester City but knows that he must remain at the top of his game if he wants to retain that place – especially with the recent arrival of Wayne Routledge at the club.
Dyer said “Wayne coming in means there is great competition for places,” said the 23-year-old.
“He can play in a number of positions, but obviously one of those is on the wing, so me and Scotty will have to be on our toes.
“And that’s fine because you want that and you need good players like him to come in and make sure we have that squad to compete in the Premier League.
“When you look around the division, even with the teams at the top, no-one plays every game. So there will be times that I know I’m going to be on the bench and others will get a chance.
“But what you have to do is make sure that you are working hard every day and be at your best to make sure that you are in and around things.
“We’ve all been looking forward to this, but not just since May,” he said.
“We’ve been waiting a lot longer than that because when you’re a kid watching Match of the Day you know then that this is where you want to be.
“We know we have the chance to show we can hack it at the top.
“And we have the belief in ourselves that we can do it because the football we play is phenomenal.
“I’m not sure a lot of the Premier League sides will really know how we can go about things.
“Hopefully we will shock a few people, even though we know it can be tough.
“It starts on Monday and a team who have made some big signings and have amazing players like Sergio Aguero.
“But, despite all that, they are still a team that can be beat.
“It’s going to be hard for us, but this is what we all wanted and we can’t wait.”
