Jenkins – I Didn’t Enjoy Play Off Final

Swans Chairman Huw Jenkins says it took him a little while to be able to enjoy the play off final result

Jenkins insists that the fact he was Chairman and everything that goes with that meant that he had to think of other things as the black and white half of South Wales started the biggest party they have ever seen.

Jenkins said “I didn’t enjoy that day at all

“You can relax a couple of hours afterwards, you can sit down and reflect on what’s happened.

“But until then, as chairman, you take on board a lot of responsibility because everything is connected with you.

“I take that responsibility very, very seriously.

“I am acting for the good of the club and trying to do things for everybody’s benefit, so I will always feel that weight of responsibility.

“So will the man at the top enjoy this season, as everybody else concerned with Swansea expects to do?

“Only if we win games and get enough points,” he goes on.

“I am not going to enjoy failing — neither will Brendan (Rodgers) and neither will the team.

“We will enjoy taking part, yes, but ultimately we have got to succeed, otherwise we are just accepting second best, and that’s something we don’t want to do.

“I may not smile then either,” he says.

“It’s my general nature. I will enjoy what I do in my own time, but I treat Swansea City as something that’s very, very important.

“You want to succeed and you put a lot of pressure on yourself to make sure it happens.

“Even if we get to the point this season where we know we are going to survive, we’ll immediately start thinking about how to make sure we survive the following year.

“We will have to change a few players, we will have to find ways of working within our budget but still beating other sides.

“We had that challenge in the Championship and now we have it in the Premier League.

“That’s probably what causes the sleepless nights, trying to find ways to do things differently, and that’s not going to change.

“The pressure is always there.

“We are all proud of what we’ve achieved,” Jenkins adds.

“As a club, as a group of directors, we are proud that we have been able to give ourselves this opportunity and we look forward to representing our city and South West Wales in the Premier League.

“It’s the culmination of a lot of hard work over the years.

“There have been some good decisions made and we’ve had some luck over the years — that’s what has got us to where we are.

“There have been many, many doubters along the way who never thought we would get this far. And no doubt those doubters are going to carry on questioning us now we are in the Premier League.

“They will tell us that we’ll hardly win a game and that we’ll be bottom of the league, and I’m sure we’ll be forgotten about from start to finish as usual.

“But we have proved people wrong in every division so far.

“We have overcome some massive hurdles along the way and now we plan to do the same in the Premier League.”
