In a business world I was always taught to never burn your bridges when you leave anywhere as you never know which ones of those people you may come across again in a future employment’. And that is why I shook my head when I saw the words of Mark Gower in this week’s newspaper.
Gower has barely featured for the Swans under Michael Laudrup and was moved out to Charlton on loan earlier this year as it became more clear that he was not going to feature in the first team any time soon.
With the choice of midfielders available at the Swans you just knew at the start of the season that the name of Gower on our teamsheet was going to become less and less frequent and so it showed with the former Southend man not even able to get into the team in the Capital One Cup after the victory over Crawley.
I appreciate that it must be frustrating for a player who arrived here five years agi but the same situation has hit others in the squad and I am sure they have been equally as frustrated but elected not to air that linen in public.
Gower claims that he was never given a chance by Laudrup but it could simply be that the manager did not see in him what he needed hence his lack of game time. When you have the number of midfielders on offer that we have it’s not surprising that Gower went further down the pecking order.
I don’t have anything against Mark as a player, in fact I think there were times when he was unfairly criticised when he was playing for us in the Championship but you always felt after our move into the Premier League that his days here would be numbered and if he didnt move on this season, then next season it would have been inevtiable.
I do wish him all the best for hie future career but I can’t help but feel a little disappointed by his comments this week but hey, such is life?
