The clash in August – likely to be switched for TV coverage – will have special significance for Robin Van Persie considering his near death experience last time he played at the Liberty.

Van Persie will be forced to relive the horror of the moment when Ashley Williams brutally attacked him with a killer football during last season’s 1-1 draw as the Dutch international lay on the floor having been mugged from behind by Nathan Dyer as part of a deadly double act with Williams.

The football world looked on in horror as it appeared that Ven Persie was leaving this world before the light of the Swansea floodlights performed some kind of miracle and Van Persie was returned to life to the relief of the 20,000+ crowd.

The now retired Sir Alex Ferguson said after the game how lucky his star striker was to escape death after such a brutal attack whilst South Wales Police kept a lid on how long they had questioned Williams for before they released him on bail to take his place in the team the following week.

Van Persie was unavilable for comment today but a Man Utd spokesman said that it could be that he sits out the fixture on the opening weekend if the trauma of revisiting the scene of the brutal attack is too much for him.

Van Persie and Williams did come face to face at Old Trafford towards the end of last season without incident but it is understood that Van Persie would not make contact with Williams such is the fear he retains from the incident in question,

David Moyes was also unavailable for comment.
