Monk accepted that they would not win many games and he was critical of his players’ focus today after they were made to look very second rate by a decent Spanish side as their pre-season fixtures closed with just seven days to go until the Premier League opener at Old Trafford.

There were times this afternoon when the defence looked shaky at best and the scoreline probably flattered us alot more than it flattered the opposition who were better than us in just about every department although there were positives that we can work with during the week leading up to the big kick off.

Monk also confirmed his desire to bring in new faces this week before the season kicks off with defensive additions seemingly a must to add some more depth to the squad.

“Today is not going to determine anything in our season.” Monk said straight after the game

“We have had a very good pre-season, the boys have worked well. We have experimented with different combinations, we have had a lot of new players come in and we have tried to bed in everything in five weeks.

“Sometimes things like today are good because they focus the boys’ minds, but it needs to be a 100 per cent better performance than we witnessed today.”

Pre-season games are traditionally used for management and coaching staff to get some ideas on formations/tactics/partnerships that could work and likewise I am sure the management team today took away some further thoughts on things that did not work and definitely ones that are best left on any form of white board rather than tested on the pitch.

The time for tweaks and practice ends today and finally to use the words of Monk once more “It needs to be a 100 per cent better performance than we witnessed today.”
