Will Fernandez Go Straight In?

On the face of it had you asked anybody before last Saturday whether he would have done I am fairly certain that the answer would have been a resounding yes but given the excellent performance of Jordi Amat in Saturday’s famous win I am now not quite so sure.

It would seem harsh at the moment to leave Amat out of the side for Saturday although there remains little doubt in my mind that Fernandez will make his debut before the international break and will become the main to dislodge rather than the man that is looking to dislodge others.

Fernandez has exactly the kind of experience that we would want any new signing to have – he was a regular in the Napoli side last season and played in both European Competitions as well as four games in the World Cup in Brazil. It would be crazy to believe he is coming here as anything other than a first choice central defender but that isn’t to say that he will go straight into the starting line up on Saturday.

He was reported to be in Swansea this weekend for a medical ahead of the move from Italy to Wales but with no confirmation of his signature at the time of writing then it may well be that he has to wait for Rotherham to arrive here next week for his debut rather than making an appearance as we look to build on Saturday’s historic win.

“Hopefully everything is agreed now and he is coming over for his medical,” said Swansea boss Garry Monk. “Hopefully he will sign at the start of the week.

“We have to bring in a few more bodies. That would be nice because beyond the squad we had at Manchester United, we become very thin.

“With a few injuries we would be in trouble, so it’s important we bring two or three quality players in.”

Saturday’s starting spot against Ash was a straight fight between Amat and Kyle Bartley – won by Amat who barely put a foot wrong against United restricting their clear goalscoring chances to a bare minimum and that may just be enough to keep him in the side for Saturday ahead of one of our most expensive signings ever.
