Let me just elaborate for a second on exactly the player we have just signed. He played for Napoli on a regular basis. A side that features on a regular basis in the Champions League and is one of the top sides in Italy. He has won over 20 caps for Argentina, a country that was runner up in the last World Cup. He featured four times in that very tournament. And now he is a Swansea CIty player. As much as that is true there are times when it just doesn’t feel possible.
Twelve years ago when the club changed hands to the current owners we used to borrow money just to be able to operate the turnstiles on a Saturday. The club had barely ten staff outside of the playing staff operating it behind the scenes and we were probably a wrong vote one afternoon from being out of business. Now we have three years behind us in the Premier League, we have over 300 people working for us in various departments (including the football side of things) and we are now in the business of signing players like Fernandez. Brilliant stuff.
Every year since we have been in the Premier League we have been making statements of intent. The first year saw us buying players above รยฃ1m for the first time. Second season we appointed one of the world’s greatest footballers as our manager and generated some fantastic signings for relatively small money with a couple of รยฃ5m+ ones to boot. Last season it was Wilf and almost รยฃ15m on one player while this summer we have signed many players each of them appearing to be a top quality signing with potentially even more to come.
When we appointed Garry Monk as manager there was a criticism aimed at him that he would never be able to attract players of any quality to the club. If we hadn’t put that myth to bed before yesterday then we have now with this signing who could easily go onto be a fans favourite very quickly.
As we talked about on here earlier in the week I am not sure that he will go straight into the side against Burnley this weekend but he almost certainly will be someone we have marked to be the first choice central defender alongside Williams and that – even writing it – sounds like a strong pairing at the back that fits nicely alongside our attacking options up front.
With just over a week left of the transfer window we of course wait and see whether there are more signings to come in but given the quality of signing that we have seen so far this summer if there is then it will be hopefully one of similar standard and that is exactly what we want to see happening.
รขโฌลI saw a team that holds the ball and plays very good football. It caught my attention,รขโฌย said Fernandez of the Swans.
รขโฌลI can identify myself with the Swansea style รขโฌโ I like to play the ball from the back and, of course, I love to defend too.
รขโฌลAnd I was impressed again last weekend with the teamรขโฌโขs performance and result against Manchester United.
รขโฌลIt was a very intelligent performance รขโฌโ the team really took its opportunities and it was a fantastic start to the season.
รขโฌลI just canรขโฌโขt wait to start training and playing games.รขโฌย
Happy Days!
