No Regrets For Sigurdsson

His goals and overall play were a major factor in the ease in which the Swans stayed in the division that season and there were great hopes amongst the fans that he would sign a permanent deal that summer.

However, things moved on as did then manager Brendan Rodgers and it looked for so long as if Gylfi would find himself at Anfield alongside the man who had not just given him his break in the Premier League but who he had also played under at Reading.

All summer long it seemed that the Reds had beaten the Swans to the players’ signature but then almost at the last minute he signed for Spurs where he spent two years pretty much on the fringes of the first team before Garry Monk bought him back to South Wales last summer in a deal that saw Ben Davies and Michel Vorm head to White Hart Lane.

And this season there has been no looking back for the midfielder with goals and assists aplenty alongside a promising start to the Euro 2016 campaign for Iceland.

And he has no regrets over how it has all worked out for him as he told the Evening Post ahead of tonight’s meeting with his former manager at the Liberty “I’ve always said I really enjoyed my time at Spurs and I improved as a player

“I don’t look back and think ‘what if’ because I really enjoyed my time at Tottenham and I played with really good players.

“I’m also playing in a good team now and enjoying my football.

“With the Brendan link, going to Liverpool perhaps seemed more likely but Tottenham showed a lot of interest in me and at that stage they had players like Gareth Bale and things looked really good.

“Things happened over the next couple of seasons, they brought in a couple of new faces, but I’ll always remember my time there as a positive one.”

Gylfi is under no illusion of the task that awaits his Swans side tonight as Liverpool push towards a Champions League place after an indifferent start to the season that saw them languishing in mid table for too long

“We have to make sure we’re ready for Liverpool because it’s going to be another tough game,” added Sigurdsson.

“We’ve got a few games coming up that we want to get some points from.

“I think after the departure of (Luis) Suarez and (Daniel) Sturridge being injured for a while, things are clicking for them now, they’re doing really well, apart from maybe the Besiktas game.

“In the league they’re doing well and looking really good.”

The Swans will be looking to put behind them their poor display at Anfield just after Christmas and continue their unbeaten Liberty league record against Liverpool
