MacDonald was a product of the youth scene at Swansea and spent six years in and around the first team before leaving shortly after the Swans own promotion to the top flight in 2011.
Since then he has featured almost 100 times for the Cherries although league appearances were scarce last season as they won the Championship to seal a first ever season in the top flight.
“Everyone who knows me knew how difficult it was for me to leave the Swans,” said MacDonald
“They will always have a special place in my heart — my friends and family know that.
“When the move came I wanted it to be to a club who played a similar style, the right kind of football.
“I think looking back now it was probably the right decision to go and play games”
There were just 20 starts in the six years for MacDonald and he also had four separate loan spells at Yeovil where he made more than 60 appearances.
Bournemouth’s promotion last year came against the odds and is one of the remarkable rises through the divisions that happens every now and again – we should know having managed it twice in our history.
“From the start last season, we believed we could be there or thereabouts, but I think it was beyond our dreams to finish up top of the league. Overall, though, I think throughout the season we were one of the better teams and deserved to be in the top two at least.”
