McLaren – Ref Could Have Been More Lenient

If anything you have to applaud the referee for the sending off of Daryl Janmaat in the first half. Many would have let his tug on Montero’s shirt go unpunished because he was already on a yellow card but the referee was – like Michael Oliver last week – absolutely spot on to show the second card and reduce the visitors to ten men.

Newcastle were already comfortably second best by the time that Janmaat got sent off and the disadvantage on headcount really just made the gulf wider and they never looked like scoring again from that moment.

The visitors went home empty handed thanks to goals from Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew and it was exactly what the Swans deserved after a professional and comprehensive performance to follow up last week’s excellent display.

But it was the sending off of Janmaat that McLaren concentrated on after the game รขโ‚ฌล“I thought it was harsh, it was a long way from goal.

รขโ‚ฌล“Okay, Daryl had made his presence known, which he needed to do.

รขโ‚ฌล“It was a little tug. I think the referee could have been more lenient.

รขโ‚ฌล“From then on, it was very difficult.

รขโ‚ฌล“I think the first one [Janmaat booking], you could see the referee had made his intentions clear.

รขโ‚ฌล“If we learn anything, it is emotional control.

รขโ‚ฌล“That has cost us, that is the only lesson we can learn – keeping 11 players on the pitch.รขโ‚ฌย
