Shared Connection………………York City

I think it is fair to say that Williams is one of the most travelled footballers ever to play for either side. In a league career that lasted for 13 years he played for 12 different clubs and had three spells at Swansea alone.

Add to that 8 different non league clubs in a total career of 18 years and you have 20 different clubs for the player, making over 450 appearances for the league clubs alone with 71 goals to his name.

It may have been a varied career but those stats tell you much about the fact that whilst he never stayed anywhere long he made more than his fair share of appearances with the three spells at the Swans netting him 114 appearances and 18 goals with 3 in 42 his stats for York City.

Williams signed for the Swans in 1991 from his local site Cradley Town and he made an instant impact with his speed obvious and it was enough for Coventry to sign him in 1992 after he won the Rumbelows Sprint Challenge and the ร‚ยฃ10,000 prize that went with it at the League Cup final at Wembley. His time of 11.49 seconds tells you much about the pace of the wide man.

Coventry at the time were founder members of the very first Premiership season and Williams scored 8 times in 41 games that season including a goal on the very first day of Premiership action against Middlesbrough.

He had loan spells at Notts County, Stoke and us during that spell with Coventry but following his move from there he never settled and rarely spending more than a season at any club with one season at York.

Williams was back at Swansea between 2001 and 2003 making his last appearance for the club against Exeter on Easter Monday 2003, a game that looked to have doomed the Swans to relegation from the football league.

John played his last game in the football league against Boston for Kidderminster scoring the final goal in a 2-0 win.
