Britton – It Was An Honour To Be Captain

Britton looked a man on his way out of Swansea at the start of the summer. The reports suggested that he wanted first team football and it was admitted that he was unlikely to get too much of that at Swansea.

As the squad headed off on their pre-season camp in Germany, Britton was left behind in Wales and played for the Under-21s which suggested that his time was up.

Interest from here and abroad surfaced and it looked most likely that Leon was on his way to MLS with Orlando City rumoured to be the favourites to secure his signature.

But both Britton and the Swans seemed keen to keep him in Swansea and after a substitute appearance against Newcastle it was confirmed that he was staying and whilst Britton admits that it is going to be difficult he is here to fight for his place in the team.

“The summer and early part of pre-season was a bit up in the air if I’m honest. I’ve known for three weeks that I was going to be staying. I’m settled and delighted that’s been put to bed because it does play on your mind a little bit, not knowing what’s going to happen but I’m delighted to be staying and it was great to be on the pitch against York captaining the team which is a great honour” said Britton.

“Of course I want to play. That was in the forefront of my mind that if I didn’t play last year and this year it’s going to be difficult. At the same time, Swansea is such a pull for myself. It’s home, I know the football club so well and that strong pull is hard to come away from. I just decided to fight for my place, keep training hard and when I get the opportunity just to try and do well and just be there for the manager in whatever way he wants me.

“Since I’ve been at Swansea, the level has gone up every year and it’s gone up again. The level’s gone up, my age has gone up, the quality has gone up. You have got to try and step your game up. I think over the years I’ve been able to do that but again you have got to try and keep pushing on. You can’t be happy with what you’ve done before. You have got to be on top of your game because the quality is very high.”
