Club Bruges 0 Manchester United 4

It turned into a bit of a breeze for Man Utd really as they qualified for the group stages of the competition thanks to Wayne Rooney who scored a hat-trick to emphatically end his goal drought.

Rooney’s first goals for Man Utd since April and one from Ander Herrera gave the English side a comprehensive 7-1 aggregate victory and the perfect setup for their visit to the Liberty on Sunday afternoon.

Rooney scored his first with a dinked shot for his first goal of the season.

The striker had a simple tap-in for his second goal after midfielder Ander Herrera’s unselfish pass.

Rooney swept in a shot for his third and Herrera sidefooted in before Javier Hernandez missed a United penalty.

Louis Van Gaal: “I’m very happy for him [Rooney],” Van Gaal told BT Sport.

“He was generous to give the ball to Chica, but it was a slip I think.

“He has the best mentality that you can imagine and such players with that level will always come back.

“This was a glorious night, it’s not easy to do this what we have done but Swansea City is the most important match now.”
