Shelvey was rewarded for the hard work and the change in attitude this week with a call up to the England squad for their qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland over the next few days.
It caps (pardon the pun) a remarkable 2015 for Shelvey both for club and country and as well as with his personal life – he married his partner Daisy back in the summer.
It is in stark contrast to the back end of 2014 where Shelvey’s career looked like it could almost self implode upon him. Some public criticism from his manager and a nightmare at Liverpool – his old club – where he was hit with a ban afterwards, convicted by video evidence.
At that point I am not sure that anyone would have foreseen the turnaround in fortune but Shelvey has put his head down, done what is asked of him and is now a massively important part of our team and he hopes to have the same effect on England.
It is credit to Shelvey though that it has happened and he knows himself what he puts it down to รขโฌลI have grown up a lot. Iรขโฌโขve had to because I am married with a child now,รขโฌย he said. รขโฌลIt has made a difference. I have more stability in my life, more security at home and feel a bit more comfortable.
รขโฌลHopefully I can kick on and get on with my career now.
รขโฌลIt was after the stag do where I thought, รขโฌหIt is time to really knuckle downรขโฌโข. There were 50 of us! It was probably on the flight back when I knew I had to change.
รขโฌลI got my stag do out of the way and then I worked day in, day out with a personal trainer back home in Essex.
รขโฌลHe really put me through my paces. He worked me hard and I wanted to kill him sometimes! But he was spot on.”
And to that personal trainer I would imagine he owes a tremendous debt of gratitude as, of course, do we
