That in itself tells you something about the complete turnaround in form that Wales have experienced over the past four years that they can make a climb so quickly.
A win over Israel in Cardiff on Sunday will spark a double celebration in the Welsh camp. Firstly of course it will seal a qualification to the final stages of a major international tournament for the first time since 1958 and secondly it will ensure when the next set of world rankings that they have a place in the top four nations in the world.
It could even be better as if results over the next few days go their way then it could be a rise to second place with just Argentina ahead of them. If Wales do win and Germany fail to win either of their games or Cyprus beat Belgium on Sunday then it will be higher than fourth. Second place would be the highest ranking any of the home nations have ever had – England once reached 3rd in the world in August 2012.
The FIFA world rankings were started in 1993 and in the 22 years since Wales highest position before this year was 27th which was their rankings the very first month they were published.
