Shelvey Honoured To Start Game

Shelvey added to his solitary cap (also won against San Marino) with the full 90 minutes for his country and he set up Spurs striker Harry Kane with his goal, the fifth of the night.

England have now won seven from seven in their qualifying campaign and can secure their position as group winners with a point against Switzerland at Wembley where Shelvey is expected to retain his place in the starting line up.

Shelvey’s form in 2015 has been brilliant since he returned from suspension at the end of January and he is putting himself very near the top of the list of players who will represent England in France next summer and performances against anybody on the international stage will not do those chances any harm.

But for now he is enjoying the honour of wearing the 3 Lions shirt “Itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs always nice to pull on the England shirt, and at senior level itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs the highest place you can do it

“Itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs just a great honour to start a game and hopefully there will be many more to come.”

“The win gives us a bit more confidence. We knew we would get the result tonight, we were confident weรขโ‚ฌโ„ขd come here and do it, but itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs a matter of going out there on the pitch and proving it.

“Hopefully weรขโ‚ฌโ„ขll get back on the training pitch and continue to work towards Tuesday.

“Weรขโ‚ฌโ„ขve got to do that and I think we can [win ten out of ten], we have the players to do it. We definitely have the fixtures, so hopefully we can.

“They (San Marino) make it very difficult for you in that final third. But we were professional and got the job done.”

“They are so deep and play with a back-five. They rarely get out and rarely get any chances, so itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs always difficult playing against teams like that, youรขโ‚ฌโ„ขve got to be patient and stay patient.

“We stayed cool, got the lucky break through the penalty and then we kicked on from there. We came out in the second half really sharp and scored a quick set of goals.”
