After a superb start to the season before the international break it was back down to earth today for the Swans with a disappointing display that showed no correlation to anything we had seen so far this season.
Passes went astray, we didn’t compete for the loose ball, we didn’t really trouble Gomes in the Watford goal and pretty much everyone put in a performance that was below par as Watford got their first win of the season to lift themselves to the relative comfort of mid table.
Idion Ighalo’s goal in the second half was enough to separate the two teams but it could have been more even when Watford were reduced to ten men in the second half with the dismissal of Valon Behrami on 65 minutes.
Fernandez missed one of the best chances of the game for the Swans in stoppage time when he directed his header high and wide when it looked easier to at least get it on target and he remains searching for his first Swans goal as a result.
“It was very disappointing. It was not a good performance by us,†said the Argentinian defender.
“It was a tough game, which we expected. It was a very physical match, but overall we didn’t play well enough.
“We didn’t get the ball much to Jonjo or Gylfi, and we didn’t really find space to exploit.
“We know we can play a lot better, and we must do that in our next game.
“The fans were great. Our away support is always incredible.
“They were really loud in the corner of the stand, and I promise the performance will be different in the next game.”
