It was two years ago that a fee for Michu was being mooted about as รยฃ20m as he came out of a brilliant first season in the Premier League. It was a point that Chairman Huw Jenkins reminded us about at the fans forum last week as he was answering a question over the future of Michu.
Manager Garry Monk said that he felt the Napoli move for him last season was the wrong one and it is difficult to argue with that fact as the career that looked unstoppable two years ago stumbles to what could now be a complete close.
Spanish sides Rayo Vallecano and Granada and Scottish champions Celtic had all expressed an interest in the Spanish international back in the summer but none of the moves came to anything. Deadline day reports in Scotland suggested that Michu had turned down a move to Celtic.
The reports today suggest that after further injury to a long term ankle injury that Michu is contemplating retirement from the game.
“It is still ongoing as far as I know, but he is not with us in Swansea,” said Monk. “He is training in his homeland and we are trying to come to an agreement with another club to take him, or find a good way to get it sorted for all parties.
“It has taken longer than we would have liked.
“I have not heard he is thinking of retiring but I have left dealing with that situation to the chairman.”
I will always maintain that this will be a waste of what was a great career and the right decision when Garry Monk took over could have made this all different. He doesn’t though seem able to shake off his injury problems which was always a factor but it would have been worth a gamble from our point of view at the time.
Let’s see what happens here but it does start to look like the official end for Michu.
