The Transfer Window – What Do We Need?

There are just over 10 days left of transfer activity for teams to undertake before the window shuts until the New Year and, with two games of the season gone, it is time to ponder now where teams need strengthening.

The Swans return of three points from two games is not quite what we would have wanted particularly when we have visits to Leicester, Southampton and Arsenal and home games against Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool in our next six but it is the hand that we have dealt ourselves and shows some key areas where we probably need to strengthen before the window closes.

It has been a strange season at the Liberty with some notable departures in Ashley Williams and Andre Ayew who left with approximately ร‚ยฃ30m coming our way in return. Add to that the loss of Gomis and Paloschi and you have some significant savings on the wage bill.

Gylfi Sigurdsson signed a new contract that would have used up some of that and of course we have had some arrivals in Mike Van Der Hoorn, Fernando Llorente and Borja.

For me though we are two players short of the squad that we need and those are where the moves are needed in the next ten days. Firstly in the middle of the defence we are short of someone to command the area and control the way that we defend the threats against us. Yesterday’s goal conceded from a corner was no surprise – indeed we had a warning from the corner that led to it – but we never learn and too often we concede what looks like a sloppy goal and we need to work on that bit.

Another of the things that we struggle with is the midfield. We have some very strong midfielders but we do lack someone who can create a chance in a split second and – with respect to them all – none of our central midfielders are likely to chip in with many goals a season. We want (and need) someone who can play the role that De Guzman used to play for us which always worked well and it has to be said that the name of Chadli who has been linked this summer could fit that bill.

Of course there will be other players out there who fit both these bills but for me if we add those two positions to our squad we will become better for it and when the likes of Llorente and Borja settle in and Gylfi gets himself up to full fitness then we will have a side that I think can compete.

Could be an interesting 10 days ahead but we really do need to do something in it.
