It ends what has been one of the most protracted transfer stories of the summer with Everton making Sigurdsson their number 1 target early on and the Icelandic international playing next to no part in the Swans pre-season plans.
What it does leave is little time for Paul Clement to react in the transfer market and we have to assume at this point that plans have long since been drawn as to which players we will be bringing in to replace the man who has been such an integral part of our midfield for so long.
The likes of Joe Allen, Naer Chadli and Wilfried Bony have all been linked in recent weeks and – despite Spurs receiving a percentage of the sale – it will be players of that calibre that we should be looking towards to ensure that the legacy of this sale is not wasted and we become weaker as a result.
Nothing official has yet been confirmed for the player but with him expected to arrive on Merseyside today then we can expect news before the day is out and hopefully some movement the other way over the course of the next few days as well.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to Gylfi for the memories he has created for us and wish him good luck in the future but for now the focus has to be on what we will do next.
