Would You Take A Cup Win Over Premier League Safety?

For me that day was a near perfect performance as we destroyed our League Two opponents on Bradford with the biggest final win in the competition’s history and finally put our name on a piece of major silverware after 101 years of trying.

Nobody I don’t think will ever forget the European run that followed with some great results and progress through to the knockout stages of the Europa League before surrendering, rather unluckily I my book, to Napoli in the last 32 stage of the competition.

The early stages of the competition traditionally means that teams – at all levels – seem to field weakened sides showing a lack of interest to a competition with league results and performances being more important.

But it always begs a question to me as to what we should class as more important, league position or cup success?

We all know that the league brings in good riches to the club but at the same time we should also appreciate that those riches go into the pockets of players and agents and not to the benefit of the clubs. From a fan perspective staying in the league does mean that we get to test ourselves every week against the best clubs in the country but does that outweigh the feeling of a fan winning a major trophy at Wembley.

It always begs the question as to what people would prefer, that being a win in a major cup competition or a Premier League finish that is 17th place or better and safety for another season.

For me I think I would take a major cup win come the end of the season even if it came with relegation. Maybe it would need to be the FA Cup rather than the League Cup – as much as I enjoyed the win over Bradford it would feel flat if we won that and were relegated. But to win the oldest competition at Wembley in May I think would eclipse any sad feeling I would have from our relegation.

I am not sure that I would be in the majority view on this one but am genuinely interested to hear your views on what you think if we could only select one this season from

1. A FA Cup win
2. A League Cup win
3. Premier League safety

Over to you to cast your votes..
