Marc Guehi may only be on loan at the Swans from Chelsea but he has been one of our key performers this season attracting a whole host of plaudits over the course of the season not just for his defensive play but the seamless way that he joins up in our attacks as well.
His performances have certainly seen more than one person tip him for greater things and this week he has the chance to showcase his ability on the international stage as he joins up with the England Under-21 squad ahead of the European Championships.
The Championships this time around take on a different look with them being split over two stages.ย The tournament gets underway on Thursday afternoon with the group stage held across six days and the knockout rounds to come at the end of May. Guehi and England begin with a game against Switzerland on Thursday afternoon before facing Portugal and Croatia in Group C.
Seven of Steve Cooper’s side that won the Under-17 World Cup in 2017 are in the squad and Guehi is enjoying the reunion at the same time as looking forward to the chance to help England to more success.ย ย Conor Gallagher and Rhian Brewster who were both on loan at the Swans last season are also in the squad.
โIt’s fantastic having all us boys that were at the World Cup together,โ Guehi told Football London. โWe’re all good friends, we grew up together and were playing against each other in youth teams and Under-21. We know a lot about each and follow each other, which is fantastic. It’s just a real good group of friends, a tight unit of players that want to do the best for one another. That’s really important.
โNaturally when you put on this shirt it is vital to go out and do your best but in this camp especially we feel there is an opportunity to go out and win this tournament.
โThere are a lot of strong teams in this tournament with a lot of good players but when you put on this England jersey the expectation is to do everything you can to win.”
