Marc Guehi and his England Under-21 team mates face a real battle to progress further in the finals of the European Championships after the Swans defender played in their second defeat from two games in the tournament.
The performance of the side was described as “limp” as they fell to defeat to Portugal to follow up their tournament opening defeat to Switzerland.ย ย Guehi must now hope that they beat Croatia and rely in Portugal to beat Switzerland to have any hope of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.
Dany Mota’s low, angled shot and Francisco Trincao’s penalty decided the game in the second half in Ljubljana.
Guehi has played both games for England in the tournament and is expected to also feature against Croatia on Wednesday evening.
Speaking after the game, manager Aidy Boothroyd said “It is deeply disappointing. You’ve got to give credit to the opponent. They’re a very good team and we got them on a good day.
“It is still mathematically possible and we’ll fight to the end. We’ve come here to play three games and we intend to. We wanted to go into the final game with it still in our hands and it’s not.”
Former Swans loanees Rhian Brewster and Conor Gallagher were both late substitutes in the game.
