Phil SumblerMarc Guehi has been one of the shining lights of a season that is fast heading towards an abyss of disappointment after a run of form that has seen us lose four successive games without scoring and pretty much without even looking like we are going to score a goal which is one of the biggest frustrations.
Guehi has spent a second season on loan at the Liberty and has been tipped for far greater things in his future career with a series of strong performances – both defensively and setting up the rarity of a Swansea attack – and praise from his team mates at both club and international level.
But even his words after the Preston defeat on Monday suggested that the belief we have heard about for weeks within the squad is subsiding and now being replaced by hope rather than anything else that we can turn things around.
The Swans have seven games left this season to try and turn around that form to secure the play off place that we have held for so long this season but the noises now from within the camp are starting to echo the belief of many in that form over the past two months is the real Swansea City. And that is of course bad news for us.
“Let’s hope we rally together, keep going in tough circumstances and make sure we bounce back, because that’s the most important thing,” said Guehi on the club’s official website when assessing the Preston defeat. Words that between Bournemouth and Cardiff were much more about believing that we would rally together and bounce back. Defeats since then to Cardiff, Birmingham and Preston have clearly damaged the belief and you are starting to think that maybe there is a deeper issue here that goes beyond performances on the pitch?
“We’re in a tough situation, but the good thing, and the beauty about football, is that there’s always another game.
“There’s an opportunity coming up on Saturday against Millwall, so we’ll just refresh and get our minds ready for that game.
“It’s a good test of character for us all – as staff and players and for the club. Trying to aspire to where we want to get to, these are the moments that could define us.”
And for the sake of Swans fans everywhere the aspiration has to be the Premier League and the defining moment needs to be that we can show we have the ability to get there. It’s over to you lads.
