Ainsworth on Wycombe’s “fantastic” performance

Gareth Ainsworth looks about as far from a football manager as most of his other 91 peers but as his side face into what looks like a certain reality you cannot help but listen to his comments after games and know that he is keeping words back that would flow from the mouths of others.

There can be little doubt that yesterday’s 2-2 draw at the Liberty would have frustrated him given the fact that, until we were gifted a penalty by Wycombe, they were the better side and spent most of the first 80 minutes probably wondering how the Swans were 3rd place in a table, 21 points ahead of them.

The two goals they scored at the start of the second half had given them what looked like a valuable away win as they went in search of the points that they hoped could see them pull off a miracle and stay up but it was not to be.

But speaking to the press after the game, Ainsworth was full of praise for his side despite only coming away with a point and was looking at the positives ahead even if they look destined to be in League One next season.

Ainsworth said: โ€œThe frustration you have goes when you have the pride of a club like Wycombe Wanderers.

โ€œDoing what we have done today, I thought we were fantastic.

โ€œI thought we played some great football, probably scored the better goals but unfortunately, we didnโ€™t get a penalty like they did.

“Forย them, it was a penalty as Jason McCarthy slipped [and handballed it]ย and that gave them the foot in the door to get back in the game.

โ€œI am amazingly proud of my boys because to come to a place like the Liberty Stadium and do what we have done to a team like Swansea I think is fantastic.”

  1. Well done Wycombe… If you had performed like this all Season you would not be facing relegation.. We’ll played and you deserved a win not the draw.
