Rooney on the Derby County “pressure situation”

Wayne Rooney brings his Derby County side to South West Wales on Saturday still looking for the points that he hopes will keep them in the Championship for another season.

The Rams are still facing up to the possibility of relegation and go into the last week of the season four points ahead of 22nd placed Rotherham United but having played a game more and Rooney knows that a defeat at the Liberty on Saturday afternoon could move them closer to the trap door.

When Rooney took charge at Pride Park earlier in the season it coincided with a strong run of form that many expected to see them move up towards mid table and possibly better but it has never transpired and they have flirted with relegation for most of the season although it has almost always been expected that they will avoid a drop to the third level.

Speaking to RamsTV ahead of Saturday’s showdown, Rooney said: “It is a pressurised situation in terms of we are trying to stay in the league.

“We are not in good form in terms of results andย we have got two games left to try and turn it around.

“We know what we have to do.”

Rooney remains high on confidence though and believes that if they play at their best the Swans will have no answer to his side who recorded a comprehensive win over us earlier on in the season.

“There is a lot of pressure on the teams chasing us as well, they have to pick up the pointsย so our focus is solely on our game on Saturday.”

Rooney later added: “We know if we play our game against them [Swansea] then they will struggle to deal with us.

“So it’s my job now.

“Of course confidence is low amongst the players so it’s my job to lift them.”
