Whittaker not apologising for Derby County celebration

It has always seemed wrong to me that players do not celebrate fully goals against their former clubs so it was a refreshing change today to see Morgan Whittaker celebrate his goal for the Swans that could help condemn his former employers to League One football for next season.

Whittaker struck just past the hour mark to bring the Swans level at a time when it looked as if Derby may push on and get the win that would have secured their Championship status for another season.

And just two minutes later Connor Roberts pounced for the crucial goal that gave the Swans a win and leaves Derby needing at least a point next Saturday to survive.

There was some criticism amongst Derby fans for his celebration but Whittaker was in no mood to apologise when he spoke after the gameย “When I headed and waited for it to go over the line I stared at the ref waiting, he looked at it and said it was a goal.

“I was overjoyed with emotion and celebrated. I didn’t want to be disrespectful to Derby but Swansea is where I am now.”

It is the correct viewpoint in that the Swans pay Whittaker’s wages and his goal could be as crucial to us in securing a higher league position as it could be detrimental to Derby.

“I’m going to celebrate a goal like that every time I score.”

“As a team we aren’t going to panic. There was quite a while left in the second half (when Derby scored).

“We knew if we kept doing what we were doing we’d get chances. We showed that. The second goal is a great one from Connor and we kept going for more.”
