Swansea City have been forced into issuing a club statement after another one of their players was racially abused via social media – this time Morgan Whittaker being the target for the mindless idiots who feel this has any place in society.
On a weekend where sports clubs and teams across a wide spectrum of sports boycotted social media as a stand against the abuse previously seen to not just players but pundits and former players alike Whittaker received abuse as a direct result of the goal that he scored against Derby at the weekend.
The club statement was as quick to be damming as you would expect and read “Swansea City is saddened, angry and appalled by vile racist abuse received by Morgan Whittaker via social media following Saturdayโs game against Derby County.
The abuse in question has been reported to South Wales Police and the club is assisting them in their investigation. ย
The fact that this has happened across a period where clubs, players and stakeholders have come together for a boycott of social media for this very reason, again shows just how much work still needs to be done.
Morgan is sadly the fourth Swansea City player to suffer such abhorrent and disgraceful abuse online since February โ a damning indictment on the world we live in.”
Social media companies are slow to act following more and more of these high profile cases and seem reluctant to change the rules that will prevent these mindless fools perpetrating their hatred and feeling it is OK to say things via social media that they surely would never utter in the street.
And the Swans stance is of course the right one and the statement remains “enough is enough.”
