Cardiff captain hoping for Swans slip up

Swansea City Ladies and Cardiff Met will go into the final week or so of the WPWL season with the Swans clear favourites to retain their league title but with the Met team hopeful of a slip up that could yet see them steal the title away from us.

It has been a neck and neck battle between the two teams all season with the only difference currently the Swans win over Cardiff Met before the lockdown that sees them have the advantage going into the final games of the season.

The Swans have three games left thanks to last week’s postponement whilst the Met team have just two left but currently sit top of the table, level on points with the Swans but having played a game more.

And Cardiff Met captain Steph Turner says that no matter what happens in the next week or so it has been a stand out season for themย โ€œMajority of it has been pleasing. Thereโ€™s obviously been a couple of games where we havenโ€™t played to our potential, whether thatโ€™s in our individual or team performance but overall, so far, weโ€™ve only lost one game so we have been playing well.โ€

โ€œIn terms of the individual girls who have stood out, I think there could be quite a few this season, thereโ€™s Chloe Oโ€™Connor, sheโ€™s come back, just after a serious back injury and I think sheโ€™s been unbelievable this season and sheโ€™s our current top goal scorer. The likes of Sophie Hancocks, Lucy Finch, they stand out when we play. The girls we signed in January, have also done really well.โ€

โ€œAs a squad, you donโ€™t want to single our individuals, itโ€™s certainly been a squad effort, especially with COVID. Itโ€™s been a huge team effort this year.โ€

Swansea boss Colin Staples spoke about the title potentially going down to the last day. โ€œAs a club we treat every game as it comes along and until we get to the final game no one can say whether the game against Cardiff City will be the decider.

โ€œHowever, the players and staff will prepare for each game as we have all season, with respect for the opposition and a plan to go out and attack the game and play our brand of football.

โ€œWe are confident the players will give 100% until the very last kick of a ball for this season, we are confident the players understand their roles and responsibilities and we are confident that they will carry out the required levels of performance warranted in efforts to win games.

โ€œMorale is and has been very high, with an excellent squad to select from, everyone keeps everyone on their toes, with a balanced amount of competitiveness, camaraderie, humour and desire.

Working with the squad is a pleasure and a challenge, as we all wish to improve and become even better at what we do.โ€
