Martin looking at key transfers

Russell Martin was clear that he is working hard to bring new players into the Swans as he faced the press for the first time since his appointment last weekend and ahead of the season opener at Blackburn on Saturday.

Flanked by the Swans Chief Executive Julian Winter, Martin was answering a host of questions around his first few days at the club, his plans for the transfer market and, of course, that all important opening fixture.

It will have come as no surprise to him though that there was plenty of focus around the squad depth which has been clear all summer it is something that needs working on thanks to the loss of key players at the end of last season.

As loan deals ended for the likes of Freddie Woodman and Marc Guehi the squad got weaker and that was before the speculation over the future of Matt Grimes who remains a transfer target for both Fulham and Brighton.

The Swans have done some level of squad strengthening – Kyle Joseph, Joel Piroe and Liam Walsh all added but Martin says there will be more to come.

“The squad is a little bit thin at the moment,” Martin said.

“We’re definitely going to add to it and we’re going to add in the positions where we feel we need to add.

“We’ve had lots of chats about that and I’m pretty confident that I’m being really well supported.

“We have had lots of communication over the first four days. I haven’t had much sleep – hopefully I will get some at some stage.

“I am looking forward to seeing some other players in the building as quickly as possible. I am confident that will happen – but you also have to respect the players that are here. It’s a good squad and everyone’s got a clean slate.ย

“There’s been speculation about a few of our own players, so we’re well aware of those situations, we have a plan in place for them staying and going.”
