Hampshire Live is reporting that the fee for Southampton striker is £1.5m possibly rising to £2m which will match the reported fee that Bournemouth paid us for Jamal Lowe earlier in the day.
It could be seen to be a snip of a fee with a £5m fee banded about in the past for the striker and someone who was supposedly out of our price range last January hence why we were looking for a loan move at the time.
When Lowe moved to Bournemouth earlier in the day many pointed out – possibly correctly – that at £1.5m for a man who scored 14 Championship goals last season that it may not have been the best piece of transfer business.
But with the reported fee for Obafemi being at the same level it could prove to be some shrewd business for the Swans on a day where there have been many changes at the club.
Obafemi was linked with moves to both Preston and Blackburn earlier this season whilst Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl made clear just last week that he was wary about letting the academy graduate leave.
He said: “We need every player this season. If [Obafemi] stays he must fight hard for his position. We want him to be in and around the group but if we see that he is not in the race to start then we will have to discuss what is the best thing for him.”
Clearly today there has been a significant change of heart at St Mary’s and their loss could very much prove to be Swansea’s gain if it is proven that we have changed Lowe to aim high.
Think £1.5 million is too Low for this young man.
