July start for the 2022/23 EFL Championship season

Next season’s November World Cup will mean a July start for the EFL Championship season in 2022/23 with the dates confirmed yesterday by the EFL.

The Championship will pause for the World Cup on 14 November and not return until 10 December to allow for call ups and players in action giving a four week gap in the schedules which means an earlier start to allow for a “normal” finish to the season at the start of May with the play offs scheduled for the last weekend of May 2023 as normal.

The Sky Bet Championship, League One and League Two set to start on the weekend of Saturday 30 July 2022.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar takes place between 21 November and 18 December 2022.

2022 following the culmination of the World Cup Group Stages, whilst League One and League Two fixtures will continue as normal. The existing international calls postponement criteria will be applied throughout, where necessary.

The Carabao Cup will be getting underway week commencing 8 August, with the Papa Johnโ€™s Trophy starting later that month, week commencing 29 August.

The Finals of both competitions will be held at Wembley Stadium, on Sunday 26 February for the Carabao Cup and Sunday 19 March for the Papa Johnโ€™s Trophy.
